Nice thread. How about Zappa on guitar? He would inject some humor into the lyrics as well. Another worthy Guitarist would be Lowell George, and we could have Marley or Tosh in the band to give it some political radicalism.

This could be done solely from a list of the Grateful Dead extended family of departed musicians. Might as well chose players with some familiarity with the music, be it from side projects or sit in jam sessions...

Jerry Garcia guitar/banjo/pedal steel
John Cippolina guitar
John Kahn bass
Spencer Dryden drums
Ron McKernam organ
Brent Mydland piano/keyboards

He died in '96, fairly soon after Jerry passed.

I might have to go with Jaco Pastorius on bass.

John Kahn tried to continue the band as it's new frontman in early 96. Their first and last show was at Palookaville in Santa Cruz. They stayed at the Best Western motel near the beach according to a relative, who ran the place. There are lots of drugs sold in that area. Kahn bought some heroin while there. He overdosed the next day in Marin County, from what I remember...

thanks for mentioning Jaco Pastorius, I'd never heard of him so I googled his name and got educated, now I'll be searching a few torrent sites for Weather Report (whom i may have heard at a JVCJazz festival in Concord, Ca in the early 80's....not sure)

Jaco also did some very nice work with Joni Mitchell in the mid 70's. He was the Bassist on some of her best releases, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, Hejira and Mingus, He also appears on her live 1980 cd and DVD, Shadows and Light with Pat Metheny on Guitar.

Forget about Morrison; I'm going with Lowell George. This is a a great post and great suggestions by everyone but Jerry hated Jim Morrison --- "I never liked the Doors . I found them terribly offensive.....when we played with them." (and he continues from there) See his interview with David Gans and Blair Jackson from June 11, 1981. It's at the very beginning of the interview in Gans book, "Conversations with the Dead."...and now back to "Franklin's" from Cape Cod (1979-10-27). - AshesRising

My vote goes to Pigpen on Vocals, Jerry and Duane Allman on Guitars Berry Oakley on Bass, Moon on Drums and Brent on Keyboards with Miles or Coltrane on horns. John Lennon would be the lyricist. That's a band I would hitchike across the country to see.

Jerry and Duane would alternate on lead (slide) and rhythm. I always loved Jerry's rhythm licks when Bob or Brent would solo. To me he was the best rhythm guitarist on the band as well.
